Youth Lagoon: Your Hipster Friend's New Favorite Band

Youth Lagoon (the newest musical experiment of Trevor Powers) released its debut album "The Year of Hibernation" today. It is without a doubt one of the most complete LPs I have listened to in quite some time. One rarely thinks of "dream pop" as innovative or unique, but that tends to be due to its lack of emphasis on lyricism and variation. Powers' inclusion of these elements, as well as the use of somewhat heavier-than-expected percussion gives it a more solid feel than many of its more ethereal counter-parts. The album moves and flows as well as any album I've heard before, never becoming to slow or too monotonous. I envision myself sprawled out on the quad listening to this record on a sunny day in the near future.
